Officials from the American Department of Energy (DOE) have issued reports about the blueprint strategy for developing a nationwide quantum internet connection. It will be using laws of quantum mechanics to transmit information more securely than the existing networks.
“The foundation of quantum networks rests on our ability to precisely synthesize and manipulate matter at the atomic scale, including the control of single photons,” said David Awschalom, a professor at the University of Chicago and senior scientist at Argonne National Laboratory.
DOE is working with universities, labs, and industry on this quantum network initiative with an aim to build the prototype in a few years.
Scientists from DOE’s Argonne National Laboratory and the University of Chicago built a 52 mile quantum loop in the suburbs of Chicago which is one of the longest land based quantum networks. This was done in February.
The main aim behind this initiative is to build a much more secure network for data transmission. Quantum internet use the quantum mechanics concept called “entanglement”.
“One of the hallmarks of quantum transmissions is that they are exceedingly difficult to eavesdrop on as information passes between locations,” according to the Energy Department statement.
These systems will be adopted firstly by banks, national security agencies, air communication etc. Eventually public will also be able to use this so called “Virtually Unhackable” quantum internet.
