Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam (Avul Pakir Jainulabudeen Abdul Kalam) was one of the most distinguished scientist of India. Kalam, popularly known as Missile Man also served as the 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007. During his term as President, he was affectionately known as the People’s President.

He was born on 15 October 1931 to Jainulabudeen, a Tamil Muslim boat owner and Ashiamma, a housewife, at Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu. Due to his family conditions, Kalam had to do assorted jobs like delivering newspaper to supplement family’s income.

He completed his graduation in Physics in 1954 and then moved on to Madras to study aerospace engineering. After graduating from Madras Institute of Technology (MIT-Chennai) in 1960, Kalam joined Aeronautical Development Establishment of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) as a scientist.

In1969, Kalam moved to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) where he was the project director of lndia’s first indigenous Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV-III) which successfully deployed the Rohini satellite in near earth’s orbit.

Kalam then had a major part in developing many missiles including Agni and Prithvi under an ambitious missile development project. Dr. Kalam have been honoured with a Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, a Padma Bhushan, a Padma Vibhushan and the list goes on.

Apart from all the positions, awards and recognitions Dr. Kalam sits in the hearts of a billion Indians for his unmatched simplicity, humbleness and positivity.

Dr. Kalam passed away on 27 July 2015 but he will live for an eternity as an example of hard work, resilience and positive attitude.
